ABOUT SKRAM:

Based in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, USA since 2001, Skram is a manufacturer of sustainable heirloom furnishings that operates under the creative direction A. Jacob Marks, one of the top 50 young designers of the Americas (Young Designers: Americas, Daab). Marks’ work has earned international recognition for its marriage of austerity, warmth and timelessness, and an uncompromising technical mastery accentuated by the use of natural materials like wood, leather, stone and metal. His approach is rooted in a philosophy that argues for the inextricability of good design, extraordinary workmanship, and environmental stewardship.

Distinguished for his refined, innovative seating, casegoods, and tables – unique in their negotiation of proportion, line and visual weight – Marks’ designs have been featured in a range of residential and commercial spaces throughout the world.

ABOUT THE DESIGN

Marks’ work for Skram explores the intersection of beauty and utility. Distilled in their character, and innovative but resonant, his seating designs are celebrations of form, line, proportion and materiality.

Our contribution to this exhibit consists of two contrasting chair iterations. The L01 Armchair– hand- shaped in solid timber–is sculptural and sinuous and at once delicate and substantial. In contrast, Marks’ new Wyandotte Chair for Skram, with its slender lines in steam-bent timber punctuated by metal and leather accents, is a bold negotiation of geometric relationships.

Considered together, we see design innovation embodied, and balanced against a spare, restrained aesthetic.
