KENGO KUMA & HIGASHIKAWA KAGU DESIGN COMPETITION

Higashikawa Town is located in the middle of Hokkaido (north island in Japan) and it’s sister city of Canmore, Alberta. Canada. The furniture design competition lead by Mr. Kengo Kuma & Higashikawa KAGU Design Competition Executive Committee.

The competition is open to students enrolled in various educational institutions in Japan and abroad who are 30 years of age or younger as of March 31, 2022.

The purpose of this competition.

The town of Higashikawa is a major producer of Asahikawa furniture. We are calling for designs that embody KAGU, a new, mindful way of life for the young people who will shoulder the responsibilities of the future.

KAGU is an extension of the conventional concept of furniture that aims to connect people to the world. We use a variety of objects in our daily lives, but it is difficult to see the context in which they are made and used.

We realized that in the current way of life, we handle objects without care and treat them poorly, all in the name of saving time and effort; people rush to get results, and don’t take the time to think deeply about the items they are using. This can have many harmful effects.

Our hope is that the upcoming KAGU design competition will provide an opportunity for your ideas, which have a lot of potential, to take shape and be used for a long time, so that a path towards mindful living can be realized little by little.

PLICO CHAIR BY FABRICIUS & KASTHOLM by CARL HANSEN & SON

The Danish designer duo Fabricius & Kastholm were masters at creating honest design that beautifully highlights what other designers often seek to hide. With its visible joints, beautiful brass fittings and accomplished craftsmanship, the Plico Chair is a great example of this. The chair was first presented in 1964 when it won the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Furniture Prize for its outstanding craftsmanship and expression.

The Danish designer duo Fabricius & Kastholm were masters at creating honest design that beautifully highlights what other designers often seek to hide. With its visible joints, beautiful brass fittings and accomplished craftsmanship, the Plico Chair is a great example of this. The chair was first presented in 1964 when it won the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild Furniture Prize for its outstanding craftsmanship and expression. 

The idea behind the design was to create a chair that takes up as little space as possible when not in use while not compromising on comfort. Plico means 'to fold' in Latin and, despite its light exterior, the chair offers supreme comfort by virtue of its soft upholstery and features an adjustable backrest that can be completely folded. This ensures a degree of versatility rarely found in a lounge chair.

The Plico Chair is the second Fabricius & Kastholm design launched by Carl Hansen & Son following the introduction of the flexible and timeless FK Bookcase. On the thoughts behind the launch, Knud Erik Hansen, CEO of Carl Hansen & Son, says: "Fabricius & Kastholm were masters at combining the highest quality materials with sublime craftsmanship, which perfectly matches Carl Hansen & Son's DNA. The Plico Chair and FK Bookcase were created for the very same exhibition in 1964 and complement each other beautifully with their natural materials and honest design. We are therefore delighted and proud to have added another masterpiece from Fabricius & Kastholm to our collection of design classics."

About Carl Hansen & Son's relaunch of the Plico Chair, Thomas Kastholm, the son of Jørgen Kastholm, says: "The chair was a turning point in my father's work and proved to be a precursor to an international career in furniture design. I know the chair from my childhood - I played under, over, and on it, and I've always liked it. I'm therefore delighted that the chair is now being given a new lease of life."

Knud Erik Hansen, CEO of Carl Hansen & Son, concludes: "The Plico Chair is an extremely versatile piece of furniture - not only in its function of being a foldable lounge chair, but also in its appearance, and it fits elegantly into the living room, the cottage, and the hotel room and lobby. It is a comfortable and cosy chair to sit in with a good book and a cup of coffee."

The prime objective of this design firm is to match people with unique spaces, working with high-skilled designers, such as Helena Morozoff, the senior designer responsible for this Park City project, who prospects smart design with no boundaries.

As a result, the strategy here was to let the material drive the design, always opting for the most comfortable furnishing, choosing and combining materials that speak to each other, which made this warm, tactile and visual feeling of a retreat possible.

This perfect combination of neutral tones and patterns, contributed to the arising of this cosy and monochromatic space, filled with elegance and uniqueness, allowing the space to evolve over the time.

In a nutshell, City Home Collective believes that “life is better when you love where you live”, so they designed this house as the perfect place to relax, reconnect and recharge. And that is why home is so much more than a space, it is definitely a feeling.

The exhibition proposes a dialogue that reflects on the changes in international design, provoked by an alternative design thinking originating in Asia. While design in Asia used to be conservative and risk-averse, the new generation has a hunger for reinventing, rediscovering, and imposing its own unique design thinking.

New Asia designers proudly embrace their traditions and boldly transform it into objects. Their works show strong marks in their respective cultures. At the same time, Western designers go beyond simple imitation, and they genuinely integrate the philosophy and the attitude of different design trends in Asia or influence a new design thinking while collaborating with Asian designers.

About A SPACE

ASPACE is a design & art studio based in Brooklyn NY, co-founded by Anna Aristova and Roza Gazarian in 2016. Our collaborative pieces are an attempt to bring in the timeless beauty of nature to contemporary lifestyle, whether it’s functional furniture or a decorative object. The essence of each of our creations is a sense of a vast open space, where ideas, thoughts or feelings spontaneously arise, evolve through experimentation and ultimately manifest as a functional art piece. Rather than particular shapes of organs, Anna Aristova and Roza Gazarian interested in the whole body system and how it’s functioning, and the connection between inner functioning and what people see in the dance performance.

The pieces are made with saturated pigmented clay mixed with stoneware. They are then partially painted with engobe and shino glazes, and then obtain natural flying ash glaze during the firing.

The sculptures were fired in a wood-firing anagama style smokeless kiln with inverted flame bouri box, called Sasukenei, which was built by master Masakazu Kusakabe in 2015.

Their design brand is dedicated to reviving the Indonesian design industry and communicate Indonesia’s distinctive design character and high-quality materials and craftsmanship to both locally the rest of the world. With Indonesia enriched with a unique culture in history and art, alvinT is inspired by the traditional techniques and how inimitable innovation can be formed in the modern approach.

Angan derives - Angan derives from the Indonesian word that means wishful, the design illustrates a state of mind where thereís a tension between the hope of progress and the fear of changing. A condition that is encaged many individuals in Indonesia at the moment. This sentiment is portrayed as a shelf, forming a cage like silhouette made out of natural rattan poles with brass shelves. The cage poles made out of natural were designed to be un-even creating different size of opening. There are three levels of brass shelves in matte finish to place small objects or accessories.

Lumping - Lumping is derived from ìkuda lumpingî (ìlumpingî horse, flat horse), a traditional dance originated from Java commonly made of rattan. It is believed that the dance illustrated historical war against the Dutch colonial forces. These historical references were transformed into a modern playful outdoor furniture drawing a light and dynamic silhouette. The graphical woven texture of the body injects a dose of local flair, providing a nice contrast to its solid black or white aluminum frame.

Lumping is suitable for both indoors and outdoors. Also available in natural rattan.

Mingle - Mingle is a bench for three people. The idea behind it is that in Indonesia we need furniture that communicates what a modern contemporary Indonesia design is. This is expressed by using a local identity wrapped in an international visual language and it has a meaning to provoke dialog between its users in order to start a conversation.

Apical Reform

Founded in 2011, Apical Reform is a collaborative design studio dedicated to creating immersive experiences led by art and innovation. Led by Owner and Creative Director Amrish Patel and Design Director Darshan Soni. Our latest installations can be found in the Dubai Design District such as the My Dubai City sign, Melt, and Sonuslexica, The year of Zayed artwork and The year of tolerance artwork. We are also privileged to be working with the Ithra Museum, Saudi Arabia. We have also Ventured into Kinectic artwork with ‘Stingray’ and ‘Tornado’ in collaboration with the MB&F MAD gallery.    

Piranha - Retaining the external anatomical contours of the carnivore, its actuality is imagined as a bio-mechanical machine, transposed by a metaphorical system of gears, levers and linkages fabricated in thin sheets of mild steel. The intricate details, prominent in the layers of juxtaposed geometries, add multiple dimensions to the artwork as it reveals the hidden.

Summer Splash! Have fun with the Lipstick collection of outdoor furniture!

Fun and good-humored in character the Lipstick collection is one of the most laid back and vibrant of Diabla’s designs. For its creation, José A. Gandía-Blasco Canales was inspired by an everyday object and at the same time a fetishistic one: the lipstick. A set of furniture that includes an armchair and coffee table with a Pop feel, perfect for providing an outdoor space with an informal, daring and colourful character as well as being very stylish in its own right.

 

The typical oval form of the ubiquitous cosmetic is specifically evident in the back rest of the armchair, suggesting its source inspiration but at the same time not going overboard. This makes for a marked presence with a unique sensibility: that grabs the attention but is also restrained and elegant. The ideal furnishings for an informal eating space or for serving pre or post dinner drinks, offering multiple options for different compositions: four armchairs arranged in a circle around the central coffee table, two armchairs grouped side by side with the table in between or just a single armchair on its own to highlight a relaxation area using the coffee tables as a foot rest like a chaise-longue.

The two furniture elements that makeup Lipstick can quickly adapt to all types of terrain given that they made from 100% recyclable polyethylene, a material that is exceptionally resistant to and recommended for inclement weather. And given that the collection does not explicitly have a summery look it can quickly be dressed with cushions or a throw to create an outdoor ambiance at other times of the years when the weather is less warm, in fact, all year round.

Designed originally for GANDIABLASCO the Lipstick collection now forms part of the Diabla catalogue with new versions available in an unusual and varied colour palette that ranges from neutral tones to more daring ones, such as red and pink.
