Film: Ichigo Ichie: Hana to Mi

Ichigo Ichie: Hana to Mi is an independent documentary film written and directed by Peggy Lui. Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of Ichigo Ichie (一期一會), the film opens as Peggy crosses paths with renowned Japanese designer Takao Kawasaki. What started as a documentary gradually evolved into a deeply personal exploration of memory, human connection, consciousness, and the unseen moments that quietly shape our lives.

Instead of simply chronicling a designer’s achievements, Peggy follows the conversations, places, and experiences shared along the journey. As the project unfolds, the film examines how design transcends objects and spaces, illuminating its connection to culture, time, emotion, and self-understanding. Through observation rather than explanation, Ichigo Ichie: Hana to Mi invites viewers to experience the quiet beauty of encounters that may happen only once, yet continue to influence us long after.

Filmed throughout Japan and supported by FUJIFILM, Ichigo Ichie: Hana to Mi is Peggy Lui’s first independent documentary. Alongside One Story, The Manifesto, and her related writings, this film is part of an ongoing creative body of work that explores the intersection of design, film, storytelling, and human consciousness.

Book | Ichigo Ichie: Hana to Mi

Ichigo Ichie: Hana to Mi is a companion to Peggy Lui’s first independent documentary of the same name. The book doesn’t act as a script or a straightforward retelling. Through personal stories, historical touches, and observations, it opens up the film’s themes even further.

Readers are invited to explore design, memory, and the interplay between the conscious and subconscious, experiencing the journey from a fresh perspective. Taken together or on their own, the film and book present parallel views of the same story, encouraging us to notice how a single encounter can leave a lasting mark.
