Design Week Kyoto Hong Kong 2018

Project Background

In 2018, Peggy Lui introduced Design Week Kyoto to Hong Kong through a local collaboration, creating a platform that connected Kyoto's creative community with audiences in Hong Kong.

While the original Design Week Kyoto programme was organised by its founding team in Kyoto, the Hong Kong presentation was independently developed through a collaboration between MOD (Myriad of Design Alliance), founded by Peggy Lui, and Sekki Mori, who coordinated communication with the Kyoto organisation and participating Japanese partners.

The project was developed as a collaborative cultural initiative rather than a conventional commissioned exhibition. Without a formal production budget, Peggy Lui led the overall project development without receiving a professional creative, curatorial or design fee. Most participating organisations contributed through collaboration, professional support and in-kind resources, while Leica served as the principal financial sponsor of the photography exhibition.

Peggy Lui was responsible for developing the Hong Kong project framework, partnership development, exhibition planning, creative direction and communication strategy. She secured Leica's participation as the exhibition sponsor, invited photographer Jimmy Ming Shum to present the photography exhibition, and designed the overall exhibition presentation, including visitor experience, spatial planning, exhibition graphics, information hierarchy, wall graphics and storytelling throughout the exhibition.

Working alongside the project, Sekki Mori primarily coordinated communication between the Kyoto organisation, Japanese participants and the Hong Kong exhibition, helping facilitate cross-border collaboration throughout the project.

The photography exhibition featured works by Jimmy Ming Shum, presented as one component of the wider Design Week Kyoto Hong Kong programme curated and developed for the Hong Kong audience.

As with many collaborative cultural projects, public media coverage at the time primarily focused on the participating photographer and representatives from Kyoto. This archive has been created to document the complete project history and clarify the respective roles and contributions of those involved in bringing Design Week Kyoto to Hong Kong in 2018.

About MOD (Myriad of Design Alliance)
MOD (Myriad of Design Alliance) was an independent creative platform founded by Peggy Lui to initiate cross-cultural collaborations connecting design, brands, cultural institutions and creative professionals. Rather than operating as a traditional agency, MOD served as a project development platform, bringing together partners across different disciplines to create exhibitions, cultural programmes and international collaborations.

Peggy Lui conceived and curated the Leica Photography Exhibition as part of the Design Week Kyoto Hong Kong 2018 programme. She developed the exhibition concept, secured Leica Hong Kong as the principal exhibition sponsor, invited photographer Jimmy Ming Shum to create the photographic series, and designed the complete exhibition presentation, including spatial planning, visitor journey, wall graphics and exhibition storytelling.

*The original Design Week Kyoto programme was founded and organised by its team in Kyoto, Japan. Peggy Lui's role focused on initiating, developing and producing the Hong Kong presentation in collaboration with Design Week Kyoto and local partners.

As the project progressed, the Hong Kong presentation was developed through continuous collaboration with the Kyoto organisation rather than remote coordination alone. Throughout the project, Peggy Lui travelled regularly between Hong Kong and Kyoto, working closely with the Design Week Kyoto team to develop the Hong Kong presentation, coordinate partnerships, and oversee exhibition planning. The collaboration required frequent cross-border meetings and project development over several months prior to the exhibition.

Project Timeline

  • Early 2018 – Peggy Lui proposed introducing Design Week Kyoto to Hong Kong.

  • Project Development – Established MOD (Myriad of Design Alliance) as the Hong Kong collaboration platform and worked with Sekki Mori to coordinate the cross-border project.

  • Partnership Development – Secured Leica as the principal exhibition sponsor and invited Jimmy Ming Shum to participate in the photography exhibition.

  • Exhibition Development – Designed the exhibition concept, visitor journey, wall graphics, presentation system and exhibition materials.

  • October 2018 – Design Week Kyoto Hong Kong presented at PMQ.

The project was realised through collaboration and in-kind support from participating organisations, with Leica Hong Kong serving as the principal exhibition sponsor.

Peggy also established the collaboration with Leica Hong Kong, securing both the exhibition sponsorship and Leica camera equipment for the photography project, enabling photographer Jimmy Ming Shum to document Design Week Kyoto using Leica cameras. She invited photographer Jimmy Ming Shum to create a photographic series documenting Kyoto craftsmen and the Design Week Kyoto programme for the Hong Kong exhibition, with Leica supporting the project through sponsorship and camera equipment.
